Ramal and Idhtibaa’

Question:

What is the complete ruling of Ramal and Idhtibaa’?

Answer:

Ramal is the act of walking briskly whilst swaying one’s shoulders with the chest drawn out (akin to a soldier’s march) in the first three rounds of Tawaaf.[1]

Idhtibaa’ is to bring one side of the upper Ihraam sheet under the right arm and over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder exposed during Tawaaf.[2]

It is sunnah to perform Raml and Idhtibaa’ in every tawaaf after which there is sa’ee. Raml and Idhtibaa’ will not be performed in such a tawaaf after which there is no sa’ee. If one performs sa’ee before Tawaaf al-Ziyaarah and he did not do Ramal (in the tawaaf before it), then he will not do Ramal in the Tawaaf al-Ziyaarah either. However, if one did do Ramal in the tawaaf but did not do sa’ee, then he will also do Ramal in Tawaaf al-Ziyaarah (as he will be performing sa’ee after it).[3]

والاضطباع أن يجعل رداءه تحت إبطه الأيمن ويلقيه على كتفه الأيسر.

والأصل أن كل طواف بعده سعي، فمن سنته الإضطباع والرمل وإلا فلا، فلو كان سعى قبل الزيارة ولم يرمل لايرمل فيه، ولو كان رمل قبله ولم يسع رمل فيه.

(قوله: ورمل) أي: في كل طواف بعده سعي، وإلا فلا كالاضطباع، بدائع.
